I've been in Iran few times before but only as a backpacker. there wasn't any problem for my wife to wear jeans in Teheran but Shiraz and Zahedan was different.

anybody knows how is for women when they cycling ?
no way to wear "tshador" :-)))

I think so she will have a little problem. In Iran it`s law for women to wear a tchador.
Often it`s easier for women to wear same clothes than the other women.
Best wishes

confused Acanay,
Read Dervla Murphy's " Full Tilt" an excellent read though dated. However she is a well travelled female by bicycle.

Hey,

just read a book about a german couple who cycled through Iran not too long ago (2003?). AFAIK she was wearing a headscarf, trousers a longer coat. Other question: does your wife look feminine? I mean, would it be clearly visible that she is a woman? If she'd look rather boyish, she could pretend to be a guy... just a thought. Anyway, this could generate other probems, like what to do about the disguise when invited...

Good luck,
Andreas

P.S: my GF got the book - I'll check tonite if i don't forget about it...

Hmm u forgot to tell him the name of the book. It's called Radnomaden. The homepage is called www.radnomaden.de and on the homepage u can find this pic of her.

The book is really good and in the book is a pic of her in her cycling clothes as well (different to this one but similar). When i read the part about iran, i think it was just important that she dont looks too feminine.

cheers Cadex...

well, checked the book but it's not too clear if she'd wore a skirt (all the time) - maybe she did in the beginning. but hey: why don't u ask her yourself about her/their dresscode experiences in Iran? You should find her/their email-addy on their website (see link above).

hi robb, sorry i didn't see your post earlier. i hope this reaches you in time to be useful.

i'm a north american woman who has lived & ridden in iran (though i didn't tour there by bike). i rode mostly in yazd, a smaller city. while rare for women to ride bikes, it is not illegal or risky. sadly, social pressure keeps them out of the saddle.

'chadors' are NOT a legal requirement, blacky is mistaken. modest dress, however, IS ('hejab' in persian & arabic). i wore a one piece headscarf that many students & office workers wear; it is a single tailored piece, fuss-free & doesn't need retying. i can't remember what it's called in farsi; you will make friends very quickly & i suggest asking them about it.

i usually wore something very similar to the woman on the right: http://www.pbs.org/adventuredivas/iran/media/show1/iran_7.html

trenchcoat, headscarf, jeans. though my sleeves were only an inch or two away from my wrists, not as short as hers.

2 tips:

-before riding, i safety pinned my trenchcoat to my pants' knees, just so it would stay in place & not fly up in the wind.

-a woman wearing a regular scarf could use a barrette or bobby pin to secure it, just so she doesn't have to worry about it. or wear a baseball ball cap on top of her scarf. this is totally fine & not disrespectful.

locals & authorities understand that foreigners are new to hejab, & will appreciate/sympathize with your efforts. as always, take your cues from those around you.

be prepared for everyone to be surprised to see a chick on a bike. it's pretty funny for most. good for you guys for showing that biking is for everybody! laugh

regards & happy trails,

Ah, Vietnam and Israel are countries the human rights are very popular. shocked So much popular that Israel is the last country in world whats have a Apartheid-System. And Vietnam is a country with a massive pressure to local people.

Do you really think these countries are better?

Greetings

peter

"I don t think that I will, goint to a country that the are no human rights"
that your words

so ?? why did you go to Israel if you write about not going to such a kind of country ?

the question was about dress code in Iran - not about your complexes and weird, sick mind. Nice attitude to write "my woman" ... telling a lot about human right at home :-)
stay in peace with yourself and don't spoil this forum with your sick thoughs please
